In exchange for making Autodesk’s products available only for Windows, Lee received full access to Windows NT source code and full licensing rights to Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. After founding the company, Lee had signed a ten-year contract with Microsoft to make Autodesk’s products Windows-compatible. This marked the start of a long relationship with Microsoft. When Lee showed the AutoCAD demo at a software conference, attendees were so impressed that Lee assumed he’d “sold a million dollars of software in one day.” To Lee’s surprise, the demo drew no interest.Īfter two years of failed marketing efforts, Autodesk released AutoCAD for Windows 1.0 in 1984.
